The final event of the 2008/9 South African F1 Powerboat Series will take place at Hazelmere Dam on 6 & 7 June 2009. Although Paul Shepard has secure the title there will still be plenty of competition as three drivers are in with a chance of taking the runner's-up spot. Elzane de Jager is currently in second place on 106 points but Brett Stuart is only seven points behind her with Robert Shepard just four points further back. In addition Sweden's Erik Stark will be out on the water providing the South Africans with some international competition.
It won't be just the F1 boats out on the waters of Hazelmere Dam. They will be supported by a full programme of junior and development racing with plenty of activity on the banks to keep the whole family entertained.
Boats will be on the water from 09h30 on Saturday when the first practice session for the Formula 1 boats begins with the last race of the day scheduled to end at 16h15.
On Sunday the Formula 1 boats will have a practice session at 09h00 with the first of the three heats that make up the Grand Prix scheduled for 11h30. The other two heats will be run at 14h00 and 15h30.
A full programme is available for downlaod.
Hazelmere Dam is situated north of Durban in the Verulam area. To get there from the N2 highway take the Mt Edgecombe / Umhlanga turn-off and turn inland towards Mt Edgecombe. Follow this road and ignore the turn-off to Ottawa, Mt Edgecombe and Verulam. You will pass under an arched bridge, take the first turn to the left after the bridge, from there the road to the Hazelmere is well sign posted.
Entry fee to the resort is R25.00 per adult and R10.00 per child or pensioner. A community levy of R3.00 per vehicle is also payable.
